ABSTRACT

Fungal infections like ringworm (tinea), candidiasis is always worry and uneasiness to the suffering patients because of their recurrence. For their treatment many topical drug delivery systems are available. The disadvantage being their economy, wastage etc. Therefore it was found essential to find an alternative in topical drug delivery and economical in therapeutic work. Amongst them clotrimazole soap bar is considered to be the convenient treatment for skin diseases. Hence it was planned to prepare clotrimazole soap bars to counter all the above disadvantages effectively. The drug selected in the present study is clotrimazole which has antifungal activity. The preparation and study of clotrimazole soap bars was carried out in various phases. Phase-I: Preparation of clotrimazole soap bars. In this, soap bars were prepared by heating, emulsification, congealing and molding technique using reported formulas and procedure (Cold Process Method). Phase-II: Characterization of prepared Clotrimazole soap bars by measuring the parameters like thickness, weight, foam test, stability studies, drug content uniformity, pH, FTIR. Phase-III: Antimicrobial Evaluation. It showed good zone of inhibition. Phase-IV: In-vitro drug release was studied and it showed excellent drug release. Phase-V: Primary skin irritation test was carried out on rabbits, guinea pigs and human volunteers, showed no sensitization and edema on skin after 72 hours of application. The results of present study revealed that the prepared clotrimazole soap bars of Clotrimazole are convenient for use, gives good foam on application, showed uniform drug content and no skin irritation on animals as well as on human volunteers.
