ABSTRACT
In the contemporary era of emerging Pathogens and lifestyle disorders, the immune system's role in maintaining health is of paramount importance. Ayurveda approaches immunity through the holistic concept of Vyadhikshamatva (Disease resistance), which encompasses not only the body's ability to fight manifested diseases (Vyadhi-Balavirodhitvam) but also its capacity to prevent the initial pathogenesis (Vyadhi-Utpadaka Pratibandhakatva). The foundation of Vyadhikshamatva relies on the equilibrium of Doshas (Humors), Prakriti, Jiva Shonita, Prakrita Shleshma, Sara (Excellence of Body Tissues), Ojas (the vital essence of all tissues) & optimal Agni (digestive and metabolic fire). Ayurveda classifies immunity (Bala) into three distinct types: Sahaja (Congenital or Genetic), Kalaja (influenced by time, season, and age), and Yuktikrita (acquired through diet, lifestyle, and therapeutic interventions). A synergistic comparison reveals striking parallels between Ayurvedic principles and modern immunology. Sahaja Bala directly correlates with innate (Non-specific) immunity, providing the first line of defense. Kalaja Bala (Natural Acquired Immunity), modulated by seasonal cycles (Ritu) and age (Vaya). Yuktikrita Bala mirrors acquired or adaptive immunity, which can be enhanced through modern methods like vaccination, or Ayurvedic regimens like Rasayana (rejuvenation therapy) acting as immunomodulators and antioxidants. Furthermore, the Ayurvedic emphasis on Agni closely parallels modern understandings of the gut microbiome's critical role in immune regulation.
