ABSTRACT

Diabetes is a major health problem affecting mankind since ancient times. Both developed and developing countries are witnessing a rapid rise in glycaemic level among the population. Diabetes is a metabolic disorder characterized by impaired carbohydrate utilization and enhanced lipid and protein metabolism due to insulin deficiency ultimately resulting in hyperglycaemia. Prameha is closely correlated with diabetes mellitus because both shares identical Hetu (causes) and Lakshana (clinical symptoms). Ayurvedic texts describe the etiology, pathogenesis, classification, prognosis, complications and management of Prameha in detail The present case study reports 44 years old female patient who visited an BSDT'S Ayurvedic hospital with chief complaints of Prabhootmutrata (frequent urination), Naktamutrata (Nocturia), Sweda-adhikya (excessive sweating) and Daurbalya (weakness), based clinical features, physical examination and laboratory investigation, the patient was diagnosed with Prameha (Type 2 Diabetes mellitus). The treatment protocol included Shamana chikitsa along with Pathya-apathya (appropriate dietary and lifestyle modifications). Regular follow-ups were conducted at intervals of 30 days over a period of 3 months to assess therapeutic outcome.
