ROLE OF RITUCHARYA (SEASONAL REGIMEN) IN PREVENTING LIFESTYLE DISORDERS SUCH AS DIABETES AND HYPERTENSION

ABSTRACT
Lifestyle disorders, particularly diabetes mellitus and hypertension, have emerged as major global health challenges, with their prevalence escalating dramatically in both developed and developing nations. The traditional Indian system of medicine, Ayurveda, offers a comprehensive preventive approach through Ritucharya, or seasonal regimen, which emphasizes harmonizing one's diet and lifestyle with natural seasonal variations. This review examines the theoretical foundations of Ritucharya within Ayurvedic philosophy, its mechanisms of action in preventing metabolic and cardiovascular disorders, and the emerging evidence supporting its efficacy. Ritucharya operates through the principles of dosha equilibrium, enhancement of digestive capacity, and maintenance of metabolic homeostasis across six distinct seasons recognized in Ayurveda. The seasonal adaptations prescribed in ancient texts demonstrate remarkable alignment with contemporary understanding of chronobiology, circadian rhythms, and environmental influences on human physiology. Clinical and observational studies indicate that adherence to seasonal dietary modifications, lifestyle practices, and therapeutic interventions can significantly reduce risk factors associated with diabetes and hypertension, including obesity, insulin resistance, oxidative stress, and vascular inflammation. The integration of Ritucharya with modern preventive medicine strategies presents a promising holistic approach to addressing the growing burden of lifestyle disorders. This review consolidates current knowledge on Ritucharya principles, their physiological rationale, and their potential application in contemporary healthcare settings for the prevention and management of chronic metabolic and cardiovascular conditions. Further rigorous clinical trials are warranted to establish standardized protocols and validate the effectiveness of seasonal regimens in diverse populations and geographical contexts.
