DR CLYDE CORNWALL FENTON, THE PILOT

ABSTRACT
In 1934, Dr Clyde Fenton, a Melbourne medical graduate, became the first flying doctor in the Northern Territory of Australia, an area similar in size to France, Germany and Spain combined. A time when the combined population of those three European nations was some one hundred and thirty million, and yet the non-indigenous population scattered over the same area in the Northern Territory was just over four thousand. In 1930, records of the indigenous people were not kept. Sealed roads were rare, dirt roads of inferior quality were prone to flooding and first world infrastructure of contemporary Paris or even Sydney was virtually absent. Fenton demonstrated unbelievable skill and courage as a pilot in retrieving patients back to his hospital in the town of Katherine for life saving medical care. This paper describes his flying prowess and the various climatic, environmental and bureaucratic challenges he faced bringing the sick patients to optimal therapy, his medical cases are previously documented. 1 Stride P.
