ABSTRACT
The concept of Sara (tissue excellence) occupies a significant position in Ayurvedic physiology as an indicator of the qualitative status of body tissues (Dhatus). Among the eight types of Sara, Raktasara Purusha represents an individual possessing excellence of Rakta Dhatu, characterized by distinctive physical, physiological, and psychological attributes. The present review aims to critically analyze the concept of Raktasara Purusha with special reference to Dhatu Poshana Siddhanta (the theory of tissue nourishment). Classical Ayurvedic texts describe Rakta Dhatu as the principal factor responsible for maintenance of life, complexion, nourishment, and vitality. The formation and sustenance of superior Rakta Dhatu depend upon the proper transformation of Ahara Rasa through the sequential process of Dhatu Poshana mediated by Jatharagni and Dhatvagni. Adequate nourishment and metabolism of Rasa Dhatu facilitate the production of high-quality Rakta Dhatu, resulting in the manifestation of Raktasara Lakshanas. This review explores the relationship between tissue nourishment, metabolic efficiency, and the development of Raktasara Purusha. Furthermore, it highlights the clinical significance of assessing Sara as a tool for evaluating an individual’s tissue strength, immunity, disease resistance, and overall health status. Understanding Raktasara Purusha through the perspective of Dhatu Poshana provides valuable insights into preventive healthcare and personalized approaches in Ayurveda. The study concludes that Raktasara Purusha is a direct reflection of optimal nourishment, metabolism, and functional excellence of Rakta Dhatu, emphasizing the importance of maintaining proper tissue nutrition for health promotion and disease prevention.
