Manjeet Singh1*
ABSTRACT
Ayurveda identifies Ahara as a vital pillar of life and stresses its importance in sustaining health, supporting physiological functions, and ensuring overall wellbeing. Classical texts state that food must be appropriate in quality, quantity, and compatibility with an individual’s Dosha, Agni, Prakriti, season, and environment. Among dietary principles, Viruddha Ahara that is incompatible foods or improper combinations is a major factor responsible for various diseases. It includes food taken together, in an incorrect manner, or at unsuitable times, which disturbs the Doshas, weakens digestion, produces Ama, and causes systemic imbalance. In modern life, frequent consumption of fast foods, processed items, reheated meals, artificial flavors, and preserved products has unknowingly increased exposure to Viruddha Ahara. Common habits such as cold drinks with fried foods, milk with sour fruits, heavy meals during low Agni, distracted eating, and irregular meal timings resemble classical incompatibilities. These patterns are associated with digestive issues, metabolic disorders, allergies, skin diseases, hormonal imbalance, infertility, and lifestyle-related illnesses. Revisiting the Ayurvedic concept of Viruddha Ahara in today’s context offers meaningful insights for preventive healthcare and dietary awareness. This review aims to analyze the Ayurvedic understanding of Viruddha Ahara, explore its types and consequences, and highlight its significance in modern dietary practices to enhance public awareness and promote healthier food habits.
