UNDERSTANDING PARADI GUNAS: FOUNDATION OF AYURVEDIC PRACTICE
Dr. Chhavi Mahajan*
ABSTRACT
In the present era, there is a growing need to apply the fundamental principles of Ayurveda in a manner that can be scientifically examined and validated through research. Ayurveda explains the nature of all substances with reference to five essential factors—Rasa, Guna, Virya, Vipaka, and Prabhava. Among these, Guna is regarded as the most fundamental principle of creation, both in Ayurveda and in Indian philosophy. Since Gunas play a pivotal role in clinical practice, Ayurveda places great importance on their understanding and application. While several aspects influence the success of treatment, Acharya Charaka has particularly emphasized the significance of the Paradi Gunas. These are considered special attributes that guide physicians, pharmacists, and researchers in their practical work. According to Charaka, without proper knowledge of Paradi Gunas, the effective management of diseases is not possible. They assist in the selection, modification, and appropriate use of medicines, taking into account the patient’s condition as well as the factors of time and place. There are ten Paradi Gunas, among which Samyoga Guna holds prime importance, as no therapeutic action can take place without some form of combination or association. This concept is clearly reflected in Ayurvedic practice, for instance, in the use of Anupana with drugs and diet—such as administering Haritaki Churna with Gavya Ghrita in cases of Vibandha. Hence, a detailed review of the literature on Paradi Gunas provides valuable insights into their clinical relevance and highlights their crucial role in enhancing therapeutic outcomes.
