A REVIEW ARTICLE ON DANTASHOOLA (TOOTHACHE) AND IT S MANAGEMENT AS GIVEN BY AYURVEDA

ABSTRACT
In Ayurveda Danta (teeth) plays important role in digestion and overall health. As per Ayurveda, Danta is one of the sites of the main organ Mukha (oral cavity) which comprises of seven sub sites.15 Danta be ing compact and hard structure enumerated in the list of body parts consider under Pitruja Bhava (factors derived from father).15 In Ayurveda, tooth pain is referred as Dantshoola (toothache). According to Ayurvedic principles, tooth pain is caused by an i mbalance in the body Doshas, particularly the Vata Dosha. Any inflammatory condition affecting the gums give rise to pain and burning in the gums. Local applications like warm paste of Bilva (Aegle Marmelos), Tila (Sesamum Orientale) and Eranda (Ricinus Co mmunis) prepared in Kanji (rice gruel) should be applied over the site pain. This Poultice (cataplasm) is useful in relieving tooth ache. Toothache is not a disease it is a symptom. Apart from symptomatic treatment, it is important to treat the root cause of pain i.e. the disease condition giving rise to pain. Many oral conditions may mimic tooth ache and that’s why it is important to rule out the causes with history taking and physical examination. Administration of pain relieving agents form the basis of symptomatic treatment. The pain relieving agents includes Vata Prashmana (pain reliever) and Vedana Sthapana (sedatives) drugs.14
