Dr. Rohan Verma, Dr. Shashi Bala Saini and Dr. Khushbu Biban

ABSTRACT

Introduction Mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and stress are growing concerns worldwide. Ayurveda, the ancient system of medicine from India, offers a holistic approach to mental health by addressing both the body and mind. It focuses on balancing the three fundamental Doshas Vata, Pitta, and Kapha which govern mental and physical functions. Ayurvedic texts highlight the importance of mental well being and recommend therapies such as herbal remedies, yoga, meditation, and lifestyle modifications for the prevention and management of mental disorders. Materi al and Methods This review draws on classical Ayurvedic literature, clinical studies, and contemporary research to explore the role of Ayurvedic practices in mental health management. Ayurvedic herbs like Brahmi ( Bacopa monnieri ), Ashwagandha Withania s omnifera ), and Shankhpushpi ( Convolvulus pluricaulis ) have been extensively used for enhancing cognitive function and managing stress and anxiety. Ayurvedic diet (Sattvic diet) and practices like Abhyanga (oil massage) and Nasya (nasal administration of me dicated oils) are also examined for their therapeutic potential. Results Studies show that Ayurvedic interventions help in reducing symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression by restoring the balance of Doshas, improving digestion, enhancing sleep, and supporting overall mind body harmony. Herbs like Brahmi and Ashwagandha have been shown to enhance memory, reduce cortisol levels, and promote emotional resilience. Panchakarma therapy has demonstrated positive effects in detoxifying the body and improving mental clarity. Mind body practices such as yoga and meditation foster mindfulness and emotional stability. Conclusion Ayurveda offers a comprehensive, time tested approach to promoting mental well being through its focus on individualized care and bala nce of mind and body. Incorporating Ayurvedic therapies into modern mental health care may provide an effective complementary strategy to enhance mental resilience and overall health. Further clinical trials are needed to validate and refine these interven tions in contemporary mental health practice.
