ABSTRACT

Aim: To study the importance of Encapsulating antimicrobial drugs into multilamellar liposomes. Material and Methods: Drug resistant bacteria was identified from clinical specimen, ESBL E. coli, processed for the study. Different antibiotics (such as Amikacin, Ciprofloxacin, loaded multilamellar vesicles were prepared by the simple hydration method, in vitro. Antimicrobial activities were determined in comparison to those of the free drug by means of zone of inhibition by agar well diffusion; they were compared with ATCC standards. Secondly, antimicrobial activity of liposomal antibiotics, PEG coated liposomal antibiotics against clinical strains, ATCC strain was compared to that of the free drugs. Further, For Liposomal characterization UV,AFM, TEM was used, encapsulation efficiency was also included in this study. Results: Antimicrobial activity of liposome’s containing antibiotics exhibited a higher antimicrobial activity compared with the free drug. 35-36 mm zone size seen with PEG. Demonstrating that liposomal drug delivery systems may contribute to increase the antibacterial activity of drugs especially against drug resistant strains. Our present study investigated that the improvement of the therapeutic potential of Amikacin, Ciprofloxacin, could be achieved by encapsulation in polyethylene glycol (PEG)-coated long –circulating sustained-release liposomes.
