ABSTRACT
The interest in the antioxidant activity of plant extracts in the last years has become larger and very important. This is because the fact that free radicals e.g. reactive oxygen species (ROS) may be responsible for various diseases, e.g. heart diseases, stroke, arteriosclerosis and cancer, as well as for aging process. The traditional medicine still has a main role in the primary health care in Yemen so this study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of methanol stems and leaves extracts of Yemeni Argemone mexicana Linn and the phytochemical study. The obtained extracts were tested for their antioxidant activity using 2% of DPPH on TLC and evaluate the scavenging activity of DPPH radical method. In addition, a phytochemical screening of the methanol extracts was done. In DPPH scavenging assay was observed that stem methanol extract exhibit higher activity of radical scavenging activity with IC50 value 19.38 ?g/ml than methanol leave extract with IC50 21.83 ?g/ml, and vitamin C that give IC50 15.6 ?g/ml. The Yemeni Argemone mexicana Linn stem methanol extract has been reported to possess showed strong anti-oxidant a significant different with p
